Manteo's blog: Post-App/Winter Break Update

A lot has happened over the past few weeks/months in my ‘track world’ so here I am to let you know how it all went down. My first indoor meet of the season was the Appalachian State Invitational on December 5th. I only competed in the 400m as well as the 4x400m relay for this meet due to the massive amount of curves within the facility. My coach felt it would be best if I didn’t run the 200 for that reason and the 55 I’m just not ready for. It seems as if all the hard-work, proper coaching and REST played a major part of my performance in the 400 at App. I ran a time of 47.88, breaking the Holmes Center Record (48.42 in 2003 held by Otto Spain of Clemson and 48.10 in 2007 held by myself)! That’s the fastest ever ran in the facility (obviously) and I was quite proud of it being that it was a PR for me. After talking with my coach, I felt pretty motivated about it, even though it may not look fast on paper; it truly is fast considering the layout of this particular track. He told me the 47.8 could easily compute to a 46high on a 200m track (like Clemson) or even faster on a banked track! With that being said, I’m just overjoyed at the opportunity I have this time around to possibly do something special for myself, my team, and my school! I know that without God, my family, and my coaches I could not have any success at all so I thankful for all of them too!

As of now, I’m at home training in Shelby and Charlotte, North Carolina over the Christmas break. This is where most people tend to slack and fall of the charts as far as speed and endurance goes, so that is why I am training hard and remaining focused on what I want to accomplish and I’m willing to commit to anything that will make me better as an athlete. My schedule consists of weights on Mon. Wed. and Fri. while my running continues just as it would be at Western Carolina University with practice from Mon. to Fri. with a relaxed (jog day) on Wed. and a morning jog and stretch on Sat. Being that a lot of my teammates live within a 1hr. radius, we’re planning on meeting up to practice a lot over break just to keep things intact so hopefully that will pay off for all of us!

A lot of people have been asking me about my goals track-wise this year… As of now I haven’t established any! I mean, all can say is probably what anyone would say and that’s just to run faster than I did last year, or basically to PR! I think 2009 has a lot to offer me (I HOPE AND PRAY) and I feel that it will be prosperous for me too. That’s how I feel now, so there’s no telling if that feeling will change in the coming year, months so… anyways… Go CATS!!Strive6

Hello again

Sorry, I have not had the time recently to post any track & field news or training techniques, but I promise within the next few weeks that will all change. Now that final exams are over I can do some blogging. Tom Borish at trackshark is doing a tremendous job of offering insight college training tactics from around the nation. Here are some training tactics from his website:

Coach Darryl Anderson - Texas Christian

Coach Dennis Shaver - LSU - best known for coaching Xavier Carter and '08 Olympian LoLo Jones

EliteTrack.com: Sleds or not?

Western Carolina huh?

Manteo Mitchell blog

I'm Manteo Mitchell, a senior from Western Carolina Univeristy! I'm a sprinter who also runs on the 4x1 & 4x4 relays! My current PR's are 20.83 (200), 46.23 (400). I hope to improve on my times this year as it is my last year of running (collegiately)! I have ambitions of making a career out of track and field! After obtaining my degree in Sport Management, I would also like to hold a job position in Athletic Administration in a College or University!!! Anyways, I look forward to letting you into my world as I finish out my last year here at THE Western Carolina University!

Catamount Track and Field Update

What are they doing out there?

A lot of people and students around campus have been asking why they see us out at the track regardless of the weather conditions: POURING rain, HOT & humid, FREEZING cold... Makes no difference!! The "track-cats" are always down and willing to do whatever it takes to get that Team Championship in February and again in April!! Does that answer your question?

In recent news, our teams are still in preseason! We've been guided in a new direction in the weight-room by applying more explosive type drills in the! (Shout out to Coach Brian Tatum). Workouts on the track are beginning to pick as we're approaching the first Indoor meet of the season, which is the ASU Opener on December 5th! With a little more than a month remaining, we are thrilled and we're anticipating our first meet at our rival school, so be on the lookout for us.

Quote of the Month: "Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the `me' for the `we.'"

Trevor Graham gets home confinement in doping case

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge sentenced disgraced track coach Trevor Graham (photo) to a year of home confinement Tuesday for lying to federal investigators.

Graham once coached Marion Jones (photo), Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin. All were later banned for taking performance-enhancing drugs. Jones was released from prison Sept. 5 after completing most of her six-month sentence for lying about her steroid use.

I am not going to change the way I feel about Coach Graham because of his actions. He was an awesome coach who just made too many poor decisions in his coaching career, which is a good lesson for myself and others, who are trying to pursue a career as a track coach on the professional level or college level.

Fall training update: Tennessee women

Another fall training update by Trackshark.com. Coach J.J. Clark's, Lady Vols are ready to reclaim the SEC indoor track title. Coach Clark is one of my all-time favorite collegiate coaches. His dad, Joe Clark has inspired me as well with his motivational speeches.

Bolt ends olympic games with 3 GOLDS

Usain Bolt 9.69 WR, 19.30 WR, 37.10 WRMichael Phelps 8 GOLDS

Questions?
Can US track athletes rebound in 2012 London?
Did Jeremy Wariner make a huge mistake when he left Clyde Hart for Michael Ford?
Will Bolt break 43 seconds in the 400-meter dash?
What will happen at the Berlin World Championships 2009?
Will Gay rebound?
Will Powell ever win a gold medal? http://www.berlin2009.org/
Would you put Jamaican Sprint coaches Glen Mills and Steve Francis in the same category with George Williams (Saint Augustine's College), Clyde Hart (Baylor), Tom Tellez (Houston), Brooks Johnson (California Polytechnic State University), Ed Temple (Tennessee State), Leroy Walker (NC Central)?

Friend Gilmore makes Georgia women's soccer team

Photo above: Meghan Gilmore and Caroline Kirby (NC State) race in 2005 at the NCHSAA XC Championships.

Athens GA - Friend and former Roberson high cross country standout, Meghan Gilmore, made the UGA women's soccer team as a walk-on. Gilmore was named 2008 North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year this past spring, she was Roberson's all-time leader in goals (117). In the process, Gilmore lead Roberson to 28-1 record and berth in 3-A state championship game this past spring. The Rams also were ranked #1 in the nation for part of the season. Gilmore was quite a standout in cross for the Lady Rams. Gilmore ran 19:54 (5k) at the 4-Runners Only Race in 2005. In 2001 she earned All-American honors in the 1500-meter run (Midget girls age group) at the Junior Olympic National Championships. I talk to Ms. Gilmore last Friday and she said that soccer is going good so far and that she loves playing with her new teammates. I wish Meghan the best and hopes she continues to excel!!! PS: Meghan and I was privilege to both play under one of the best soccer coaches ever, Rob Wilcher.

CULLOWHEE USA

Cullowhee, NC - I am coming live from the hills of Cullowhee, North Carolina home to the 2008 men's indoor track and field southern conference championship team and women's outdoor track and field so-con champions. On Friday August 1st I received a diploma in Arts from Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College. To me the diploma signifies how hard I worked this pastsummer. I made the A-B honor roll after taking 19 hours in a condense pace. I am proud to announce I will be attending Western Carolina University to finish my study in Sports Management with a concentration in Exercise Science. In the process, I hope to join track and cross coach Danny Williamson and forces as a walk-on. After I graduate in 2010 I would like to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, Tennessee or Appalachian State for post studies in Exercise Science. Right now I will just focus on that BS degree first.

What's the Benefit?

The statement was made earlier this week, "I am seeing to many training programs that make conditioning the main focus and not enough speed training. What is the benefit?"

Of course if your not a sprinter then you will not benefit from the conditioning, and its not going to be a main concern. Sprinters focus on conditioning in the off season because they don't want to peak too earlier. They also have to allow their bodies some time to rest from the long, demanding stress that they put on their legs throughout the season.

Earlier I said that you wouldn't benefit from conditioning if you were not a sprinter. That was a false statement on my behave. Any athlete will benefit from conditioning. Depending on what type of athlete you are, will determine how much conditioning, if any, you will do in the off season. I recommend that every athlete should spend some time conditioning in the off season. It wont hurt you, if anything, it will help you.
